Borderlands 4 hits 250K Steam players, but performance issues see it rated Mixed
Were you looking forward to playing Borderlands 4 on PC? Then we’ve got good news and bad news. The good news is that with a peak of 252,530 concurrent players (via SteamDB), you won’t have a problem finding players to team up with.
That’s a massive step up from Borderlands 3’s launch, which maxed out at just under 90,000 players. The bad news, for both players and developer Gearbox Software, is that players have been running into performance issues and the game is rated Mixed on Steam.
What kind of performance issues? Some players report sluggish frame rates, crashes, glitches and other issues. It’s not that these are just occurring on low-spec PCs, either. Many of the negative reviews cite mid to high-range specs, claiming that Borderlands 4 is still struggling.
“It runs like absolute garbage. Cannot recommend this game until they’ve
fixed the performance issues,” reads one review. Many
of the negative reviews still have good things to say about the game, but
players are clearly frustrated about the issues that are preventing them
from enjoying it. “Fun? Yes.
Optimized? Absolutely not. Playable?
Barely.” adds another review.
Gearbox Software has acknowledged the issues on Steam, stating that “Our team is actively working on patches to improve optimization and stability across a wide range of systems.”
Console players have had a better time of it performance wise, though some are requesting that Borderlands add in a FOV option for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The game has been well-reviewed, and is rated ‘Mighty’ on OpenCritic. Gearbox admitted that the previous game was a little too heavy on low-brow gags and, by all accounts, Borderlands 4 is a return to the Borderlands humour of old.
Borderlands 4 is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC. It’s also getting a Nintendo Switch 2 release this October 3rd.
